another reason we LOVE leather.
Today’s reason,
“I love knowing I am making a sound choice for the environment.”
LEATHER IS A BY-PRODUCT, A “LEFT-OVER”, OF THE MEAT INDUSTRY.
Townsend Leather is produced from cowhides that are sourced and tanned in Europe, then dyed & finished at our facility in the USA. Tanning converts cattle hides from an otherwise unusable byproduct of meat production into high-quality leather. This keeps hides out of the waste stream. The tanning process is tightly regulated in Europe to assure minimal impact on the environment. The dyeing & finishing processes that convert the unadorned tanned hide into the beautiful colors and textures of Townsend Leather are also closely regulated in the US. Townsend employs no hazardous retanning chemicals and uses a complete water-based finishing system in all of its manufacturing. Townsend takes pride in our green efforts.
Not only is Townsend’s leather a sound choice for the environment, but Townsend as a company is a sound choice for the environment as well. With our active Green Team always at the ready, (see Earth Week and Clean-Up Event), and our company-wide commitment to making the best environmental choices we can. Striving to make a positive environmental impact.

another reason we LOVE leather.
Today’s reason,
“I love how breathable leather is.”
JUST LIKE SKIN.
Leather has pores and a fiber structure that allows for air, heat, and moisture to pass through. It IS skin, so it acts like skin and quickly adapts to body temperatures. As a result, leather adds warmth to any room or has a cooling effect on hot days. Leather feels tremendously comfortable to sit in, like your own second skin.

another reason we LOVE leather.
Today’s reason,
“I love how durable leather is.”
AS MANKIND’S OLDEST TEXTILE, LEATHER WAS TRADITIONALLY WIDELY USED TO CREATE CLOTHING, CONTAINERS, AND EVEN SHELTER BECAUSE OF ITS NATURAL DURABILITY AS WELL AS ITS ABILITY TO MAINTAIN A LUSTROUS SHEEN AND COAT FOR YEARS & YEARS.
Leather won’t crack or split after years of use, instead, it will get softer. Leather is sun and heat resistant. Leather has a dense, tangled, natural, and complicated fiber structure. It is extremely tangled and intertwined on a microscopic level. This intertwined fiber structure allows it to be breathable, stretchable, & durable.
Simply put, leather lasts and lasts…
Without the strength, flexibility, and mostly the durability of leather – Indiana Jones wouldn’t be able to do all this, with his whip!

Townsend Leather LOVES LEATHER, we love talking about it, using it, creating it, and educating on it. We are on a continuous effort to help everyone understand the intricacies of leather and some of the finer details that can be hard to keep straight if you aren’t working with leather on a daily basis.
So, we have released a few Townsend Leather “bulletins”. You can see the archives here on our Resources Page. These Bulletins are meant to serve as easily-digestible leather factoid sheets. Giving you a bit more information and detail on a specific aspects of leather.
Our most recent 2014 January/February Edition focuses on the topic of Categories of Leather. This is a downloadable PDF with explanation on the different categories of Townsend Leather, it is chock full of links and info.
Because leather is a natural material, it has the potential to be produced into a multitude of final products with vastly different looks. There are many different ways to process leather for different end results. At Townsend, we review each hide individually for its qualities, determine its grade, and then decide what end product each hide would make.
Most of Townsend’s leathers can be classified into just a small number of basic categories…READ MORE
Let us know if you have specific leather questions or suggestions for future bulletin topics.

Today’s reason,
“I love the feeling of luxury that leather evokes.”
LEATHER ELEVATES ANY DESIGN, FROM COMMONPLACE OR EXPECTED TO SEXY AND ELEGANT AND GIVES IT AN UNDENIABLE AURA OF LUXURY.
High-end designer handbags are made of leather for a reason. Leather innately portrays a sense of sophistication, beauty, and high design that cannot be replicated with other materials. Using leather on upholstery, on case goods, or even on walls, floors, or ceilings means that you will have a design that will be classic and timeless, never dated or out of style.
Few things are so emblematic of luxury and comfort as leather. That is why, when designers want to create a feeling and environment of luxury and extravagance this is the one material they turn to. The famous 7 Star luxury hotel in Dubai, The Burj Al Arab, knows that only one material is suitable to set the tone and feeling they want. The bright red couches in the lobby, are expertly designed in Townsend leather to be one of the first things you see, and because of the feeling of luxury that leather evokes, you are instantly “taken away” with a feeling of opulence and comfort.
You can experience a bit of that feeling by watching this video exploration of the Burj Al Arab. The Burj Al Arab boasts leather couches, chairs, and even Townsend Leather leather floor tiles to complete their luxurious environment.

another reason we LOVE leather.
Today’s reason,
“I love that leather is natural.”
LEATHER IS FIRST AND FOREMOST A PRODUCT OF NATURE.
Because of this, there is an inherent natural beauty and uniqueness to each and every hide or skin. Leather is not made of plastics and is not engineered out of machine-made parts. In fact, at Townsend Leather, we believe the very best leathers are altered as slightly as possible from their natural state. Our leather craftspeople, with years of experience in the art of leather-making, seek to enhance the natural characteristics of each hide, not over-engineer or hide them.
Leather has a beautiful connection to the earth and nature. It has a unique natural snowflake type beauty in that each hide has a history and its own story to tell. Choosing leather means recognizing this connection to nature and pays homage to our beautiful world.
This post shows two other companies’ expressions of the natural beauty of leather.

Over the past couple weeks Townsend has been celebrating an upcoming retirement of one of our longest standing exemplary employees.

But we haven’t only been celebrating. We have also been preparing. Preparing for how to say goodbye to someone who so epitomized the values and work ethic of Townsend Leather and preparing for how to fill such a large gap when she is gone.
Jackie has been described by many as a force, a leader, a go-getter, a do-er. She doesnt stand idly by, she takes action, gets things and people moving. She has been with Townsend for 25 years. She has had her hand in all the ups and downs over that time and has literally had her hand on thousands and thousands of hides.

Townsend Leather president, Jared Eckler has said of Jackie, “If our definition of a partner was in the dictionary, I would expect to see Jackie’s picture next to it. She has come to define for me what working hard and caring for others means.”
With her hard work and dedication Jackie has led many people over the years, even when she didn’t have a leadership role. She is a natural born leader, treating everyone as equals and focusing on the work. Even while working with her sons-in-laws. She has become an expert of a particular aspect of Townsend’s production, the staker, Jackie and the quality of our staker department have become so intertwined over the years that at one of her retirement celebrations, she was presented with her own minature staker.

She will certainly be able to “let the good times roll” during her well deserved retirement.

Jackie will be missed. She has many friends here and is considered family, literally to some, and emotionally to many. She has a vibrant sense of humor and makes friends wherever she goes. And playing on that sense of humor, someone at Townsend even went out of their way to be sure that her Townsend memories are kept fresh and safe…

By plastic wrapping her truck for safe keeping!

I’m sure it took her a bit longer to get out of the Townsend parking lot this day! We did our best to hold on and keep you here as long as we could Jackie!

Jackie thank you for your time, expertise, leadership, and everything you have brought to Townsend Leather over the past 25 years. You have been an integral part of Townsend’s history and your legacy will last far into Townsend’s future.
Please join us in wishing Jackie a wonderful retirement and in thanking her for 25 years of taking care of our customers and employees!
