Palm Springs is taking this week in February to celebrate the great impact and stunning beauty that can come from Modernism design and architecture.

Palm Springs Modernism Week, find out more at www.blog.modernismweek.com

Modernism is characterized by its clean strong lines and often of bit of deconstructing the usual scene of things.  If you are unfamiliar with the distinctive qualities of Modernist Architecture, just imagine buildings that seem uniquely “50’s” to you, or think of probably the most famous architect to use the Modernist style, Frank Gehry.

Do you have a favorite art or architecture movement?  We at Townsend do love the abstract-ness of modernism, the clean defined lines, and the creative use of interesting materials.

And being a fan of all things design and architecture we are excited to share about this event, but since we cant all be in beautiful sunny Palm Springs we suggest taking some time to appreciate the modern design, art, and architecture in and around your home town.

Below is a photo of a modernist inspired beauty not to far from us in upstate New York, just over the state line in the Berkshire mountains, the Berkshire House XIII.

The award winning Nethercutt Collection is no stranger to the Pebble Beach Auto Show or Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Townsend Leather was proud to be a part of their 1936 Duesenberg SJN Roadster that was on display in 2011 with a custom Excel Mystic Grey leather.

What happens when an in-house artist, in-house upholsterer, and in-house eccentric combine?

this…

One of the partners here at Townsend needed some new “functional artwork” for visitors to his office, and got some help from fellow partners to create another Townsend masterpiece.

Using one of Townsend’s newest hand-crafted products, our Abstract Art Stencil Texture, and employing the talents of our in-house upholstery shop The LeatherHaus, an exciting, unique and comfortable chair was created.

This chair is a compliment to the other unique and interesting pieces already in this office…

We recently saw an article discussing the influence Fashion has on home interiors and it struck a chord with us.  We have long seen related industries influencing and inspiring each other.  At Townsend, we often look to the Fashion Industry, and elsewhere, for color inspiration with our new collections.

We’ve also been witness to interior design trends traveling to the fashion world.  There has been a recent growing interest in the hand-crafted design feel, most notable in the popularity of Kuba and Ikat style prints.

With their start in the textile industry, gaining popularity in high-end interiors, those styles have now become popular in high fashion.

We won’t be surprised to see a rise in the popularity of “texture-ized” patterns and embossed looks throughout fashion and interiors in the coming seasons.

We’re certainly seeing the design trend growing with luxury interiors.

Fashion isn’t the only place we see influence, inspiration, and idea sharing – but that’s another story we’ll leave for another day …

Enjoying the winter wonderland that is upstate New York, home of Townsend Leather, we found a sudden urge to create our own wintery “leather collection”.

Using our Sample Lightbox we made a little winter-esque color scheme inspired by this photo in under a minute.

Take a look at our scheme, let us know what you think, make your own, and share it with us!

Just go to our Townsend Leather Sample Page search for colors, textures, finishes, or patterns that interest you and click the little “add to lightbox” icon  on any samples that strike you.  When you are done browsing you can print your selection to reference with your projects, you can order samples to use on your projects, or you can share your creation with your friends.

As anyone in any business probably knows, every person and every department is as important as the next in creating greatness.

We at Townsend Leather know and value the entire process of pre-production to post-production.

Our feature today ventures on into the post-production world.  A department that is highly critical to Townsend’s success and valued for its first hand knowledge and exploration of Townsend’s very high standards of quality… our QC Department.

Using a variety of specialized machinery the expert technicians really put our leather to the test, literally.  They test for a wide range of attributes including wear and flammability.

Special ovens, UV booths, flamebooths, and an assortment of contraptions regulate and document every leather order to the highest of specifications.

However, the QC Lab is not exclusively a post-production department.  We take all of the continuous findings and insights of the QC department very seriously and are continuously improving our product and processes based on those findings.

Thanks for joining us on this journey “Out on the floor”.

Townsend Leather is proud to be featured in a recent article by Aircraft Interiors International magazine.  Our own “bright forecaster” VP of Sales and Marketing, Sarah Eckler was interviewed about the current state and future outlook of aircraft interiors and the market as a whole.
