Townsend and our incredible Partners are no strangers to media coverage and awards, but it is especially fun when they both happen in the same week.
The FM Champer named our very own HR superstar, Ashly Capobianco as the winner of the Community Service award!
2025 Fulton Montgomery Chamber Annual Member Awards
“We’re extremely excited to announce the outstanding individuals and businesses that make our community thrive. This year, we honor those whose hard work, dedication, and innovation have significantly contributed to the continued growth and prosperity of our region.
Let’s take a moment to recognize the incredible achievements of our award recipient:
The Herbert T. Singer Community Service Award is awarded to: Ashley Capobianco, of Townsend Leather – Recognizing her selfless dedication to enhancing the quality of life in our community.
These individuals and businesses represent the best of what our Chamber stands for. Please join us in congratulating all the winners! They will be recognized at our Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber Business Expo & Annual Awards Celebration on April 3!“
In the same week, Townsend Leather was also featured in the newspaper, The Leader Herald.
The Leader Herald reached out to our SR VP of Sales & Marketing, Sarah Eckler. Townsend Leather has been in the “leather-making region” of New York state for over 55 years, and the journalists at The Leader Herald wanted to capture some of the changes over the years to the industry and highlight how Townsend Leather is not only still standing but is, in fact, thriving. You can see the article below and plainly see the passion Sarah has for this work nd the people of Townsend Leather.

Johnstown, NY
Sarah Kucel Eckler, Townsend Leather — Outlook 2025
It seemed to happen almost overnight.
Once, Fulton County was home to a thriving leather industry, with large tanneries and glove-making shops employing nearly 80% of residents. But because environmental regulations, offshore markets and other forces, tanneries began shuttering their doors. By the 1980s, the once-vibrant leather business had faded into obscurity.
Not all of it, however.
Townsend Leather, a family-owned business, survived the purge, and today is alive and well. After four generations, the business — founded in 1969 by the Kucel family — provides goods for airliner interiors, retail applications and hospitality functions. Townsend products are produced inside a facility at 4 Grove St. in Johnstown.
“We look like a different company today in terms of what we produced back in the ’70s and ’80s,” said Sarah Kucel Eckler, Townsend’s senior vice president for sales and marketing. “It was high volume. Leather was more of a commodity. We were running as much square feet as we could produce in a year.”
Eckler’s father took over the business in the early 1980s after her grandfather unexpectedly died.
The business survived the exodus of work overseas by finding niche markets to service. Eckler credits her father and mother for realizing the company could survive by working with major airliners. In addition, Eckler’s grandfather created a unique five-stage spray line that her father used to create colors for the leather.
“We were in touch with a designer that could no longer source leather anymore from where they were getting it for a head-of-state project that the people that were buying the plane were very particular [about],” she said. “For one week [the team] worked around the clock, perfecting these colors. We sent our samples and they improved them, and so then we got that business.”
Eckler said that after that particular project the business gained more clientele via word of mouth. As more technology came about for private planes, clients wanted more customization options for the interior.
“Cessna came on board with us in the ’90s and then Gulfstream, and now we work with all the major aircraft OEMs,” she said.
Eckler added that being flexible and producing custom colors, finishes and effects gave the company an edge, since their competitors who don’t make their own leather — instead they stock it — faced long lead times from suppliers and high minimums. For example, if a client wanted a custom purple leather, they would have to purchase at least 3,000 feet. At Townsend, they’ll make one hide if needed.
“Our customers are very demanding, as you can imagine. Someone that’s buying a bombardier global that costs $80 million doesn’t want imperfections in their leather,” Eckler said. “It’s kind of a high-stress job, but I think everyone at Townsend has a passion for leathermaking and having fun, and taking so much pride in what [we] do.”
To produce its products, Townsend uses humanely raised, free-range animals that are allowed to mature naturally. The company also has a unique cutting program that is intended to reduce waste during the process.
Eckler said that on average the company produces 3 to 4 million square feet in a year. The company currently employs more than 150 people. Townsend buys the raw material for its leather from southern Germany, where it’s tanned before being shipped to the Townsend facility. Currently Townsend’s biggest seller is what it calls the “classic cow hide,” but in reality it’s German bull hides.
“We do everything — from the aniline dyeing, embossing, finishing,” Eckler said. “Some products have a hand-tipping effect, pearlized finishes, antiques — pretty much anything you can think of. We also are offering a cutting service for some of our larger customers that have repetitive cuts.”
Eckler wasn’t always sure she wanted to join the family business. However, when the company nearly went bankrupt in the 1980s and ’90s, she saw how much work her parents were putting into the company to help it survive. She officially joined the company in 2001.
Since then Eckler has seen Townsend’s products reach all over the world, from Dubai to Las Vegas. She added that the company is always looking for new blood to continue its leathermaking traditions.
“We’re always looking for people that want to learn, grow with the company and learn the craftsmanship side of it,” she said. “But there’s that aspect to it, for sure, because you can’t learn coloring or dyeing overnight. But there’s a lot of new technology that we’re taking advantage of with color spectrometers to read out colors, and [we have] the new machines we have for cutting and quilting. We definitely want to keep up with technology so we need people that are computer-savvy nowadays.”
Eckler said she is proud of Townsend Leather’s legacy in the region and likened the employees at the company to her family.
“Whether it’s in a home or a hotel or a boat, it’s pretty neat what we do here in Fulton County,” she said. “We’re just really proud to keep up the leathermaking tradition of this area, [and] we intend to keep doing that.”
If you are a lover of leather, design, and savings… this is for you.

2025 is already shaping up to be a year that is… extra. But, with leather in our hands and design on our mind, we can put the extra in extraordinary, together. At Townsend Leather, that is our goal this year, find all the ways to put the extra in extraordinary, bring delight, excitement, and design success to anywhere our leather touches.
And we are starting the year off with new extra. Extra doesn’t always mean flashy or superfluous, sometimes extra is just the right amount of texture, of appeal, of need-to-touch-it-ness.
Sometimes extra looks like a captivating elegance of light and shadow, which is why we are starting the year with extra, by introducing our brand new product, designed by the one and only, Stacy Garcia Blue Label… an embossed woven cowhide, Arden Weave.
Arden Weave Cowhide is an intricate basketweave design with a timeless color palette made in edge-to-edge useable panels. Get samples on your design boards and see more at Arden Weave Cowhide by Stacy Garcia

Townsend Leather is proud to be a featured article in the recent publication of Business Jet Interiors International. The article highlights the many ways that leather is not only a sustainable choice, but is the preferred choice.
We love leather and all aspects of the production, including education. There is a lot of greenwashing and greenwishing out in the world, especially surrounding leather, but this article aims to clarify how you can count on leather to be your best sustainable material choice. For further conversation or information, contact us at info@townsendleather.com
A version of the article appears below.

Townsend Leather Sustainability Facts:
Leather is the sustainable textile choice
The way forward for the aviation industry, and truly every industry, is putting focus on sustainability. True sustainability starts with knowledge and battling the onslaught of misinformation, greenwashing, and greenwishing. There are many options of textiles and seat coverings on the market, but when you are looking for the green/environmental/sustainable choice, there is only one option: Leather. Leather is the sustainable textile choice.
“The year 2025 will be all about sustainability. And sustainable – is leather. The only way to get a textile that is natural, safe, high-quality – sustainable, is leather. Unmatched durability, green from its start as a by-product, an inimitable fiber structure, natural, safe, the longest lasting, and truly sustainable, leather is the choice.”
Fact: No animal in Townsend Leather’s production is killed for leather.
Leather is inherently a green product. It is made from the waste of a different industry.
Leather is a by-product of the meat industry, free-range, well-cared for, humanely raised cattle are farmed for meat, what is leftover would be burned, but the leather industry turns this waste into something life-long lasting. Not letting waste be wasted, showing respect for the animal and the environment, the leather industry turns the trash of one industry into something reusable and beautiful.
Fact: Leather is humankind’s oldest textile.
Leather has been around almost as long as humans, the skills and craft to produce leather have changed a lot over the years, but the threads of that connection to history and craft remain.
Fact: Because of its irreproducible natural fiber structure – leather is natural, durable, repairable, and life-long lasting.
With skilled technicians, a hole or tear in leather can be repaired, filled, and seamless. The intricately woven fiber structure of leather cannot be reproduced in any fabricated product. This unique, natural, woven fiber structure allows leather to last a lifetime, often longer than the frame it is used on, it allows it to withstand time and harsh conditions. The natural durability of leather can handle wear and tear that would destroy mass-produced materials, like vinyl and others. The durability of leather is unmatched, it can last as much as 4 times longer than fabric coverings.
Fact: Townsend Leather’s production is sustainable
Townsend Leather is the manufacturer, we are not distributors or resellers, we harness the history of the “leather-making region” that we are homed in, to handcraft the highest quality and most beautiful leather for seats and feets. Because we are the manufacturer, we can change in real-time, create only what is needed, and have a literal hand on everything we do leading to reduced waste and increased efficiency. We are AS9100 certified ensuring the highest of quality. Quality leather last longer, and quality manufacturing means less waste, less reworks, less frustration. With our hearts on the history of leather craft, we put our minds to the future and utilize the most cutting-edge technology in our production leading to a reduction of chemicals, reduction of water, and a reduction of energy usage.
Our production process uses water-based finishes and vegetable-based retanning agents creating leather that is free of dangerous chromes post-consumer recyclable, and low VOC.
A word on chromes: there is some misinformation about chromes. All chromes are not equal and all chromes are not bad. The idea of chrome-free leather is a green-whishing effort, playing on the misinformation and unfounded belief that all chromes are bad. Chrome-free leather is not inherently any better for humans or the environment, it is just simply a different process. Chromes are a natural element found in many things. The natural chromes found in Townsend’s production allow for the most luxurious feel and best quality leather, and they are the same chromes you find in broccoli – safe, natural. Removing broccoli-type chromes from your leather does not make it a better leather.
Our natural production process allows the leather to stay as true to its natural form as can be, we do as little as possible to it. Allowing the natural beauty of the produce to shine. When you visit Townsend Leather’s facility you will notice that no one needs to wear a hazmat suit or extreme safety protections, because the process is natural and safe. There is no fear of dangerous chemical spills or toxic exposure. Unlike vinyl or other human-made textiles, leather is natural and the production process is safe, leather is not made with harsh chemicals and dangerous production processes. Leather is not made from PVC, ethylene, chlorine, or crude oil.
The organization Leather Naturally, which ‘promotes the use of globally manufactured sustainable leather and seek to inspire and inform designers, creators, and consumers about its beauty, quality and versatility’ is a great resource for more information about the sustainability of leather and Townsend Leather is a proud member. Luxury car manufacturer, Bentley, is also a member of Leather Naturally. Bentley has recognized that leather is the sustainable textile and understands leather is the way forward for luxury sustainability.
Fact: Leather is the sustainable choice and there are even further sustainable actions you can take
As a purchaser of sustainable materials, you can truly impact our collective future. First by relying on leather as the go-to solution for sustainable textiles. But also ensuring you are choosing quality manufactured leather, like an AS9100 manufacturing leather company.
Within your leather selections, you can choose Embossed products. Embossing allows for the greater reduction of waste, increasing yield, and better utilization of the hide selection process and product mix. Creating a uniform look with an even further reduction of visible defects for patterns or a consistency of grain for grain embossings, which leads to a superior cutting yield and even further improved wear performance. Choosing embossed products can often reduce your order quantity and waste by half.
Also utilizing a leather manufacturer with specialized additional offerings such as quilting and cutting. A cutting program can save you a tremendous amount in waste and cost savings. Receive only the material you need, save on shipping weight costs, save on storage, maximize your yield. Townsend Leather offers a cutting program which is truly a cost and waste-saving program. It is the greatest method for waste reduction, to the point where even the scrap that is left from our computer-driven machine cutting is utilized for other products making it a full-cycle green process.
Fact: Leather is natural and beautiful.
When the leather in your design project has served its purpose and is discarded you can feel good knowing that it degrades through biological means. It will only take 50-100 years to decompose in a waste facility, meanwhile vinyl will take 10 times that, 1000 years – before it has broken down.
Leather is the sustainable choice, but it is also the comforting choice, the historical choice, the savings choice, and the beautiful choice.
